Aerosolized Endotracheal Lidocaine to Avoid Intracranial Pressure Spikes in Patients With Severe Traumatic Brain Injury
Recruiting
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of nebulized lidocaine before Endotracheal suctioning (ETS) compared to instilled lidocaine and the effectiveness of aerosolized lidocaine versus instilled normal saline before ETS in attenuating the increase of intracranial pressure (ICP) in severe head injured children and to evaluate the feasibility of a trial involving instilled lidocaine and aerosolized lidocaine for the management of ETS and to evaluate the safety of nebulized lido... Epigenetic Effects on Traumatic Brain Injury Recovery
Recruiting
Methylation of the brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) gene is involved in both the biological encoding of childhood adversity and neuroplasticity following traumatic brain injury (TBI). This research will characterize BDNF methylation during recovery from TBI in children and investigate this novel biomarker as a potential biological mechanism underlying the known association between childhood adversity and poorer neurobehavioral outcomes following TBI in childhood. Findings from this resea... Read More

Post-Brain Injury Walking and Balance Recovery Program
Recruiting
The purpose of this study is to test the efficacy of a walking and balance training program designed to safely challenge and improve walking performance and balance in relation to walking speed, strength, endurance, and balance after traumatic brain injury (TBI).
The aim and primary hypothesis of this research project is:
Aim) Test and implement a new personalized intervention strategy, in addition to usual and customary care at an inpatient rehabilitation clinic, to improve patient outcomes w... Read More

Verbal Working Memory and Attention Remediation for Adults With Traumatic Brain Injury.
Recruiting
This project will examine if computerized cognitive remediation will improve working memory and attention in 25 adults with a mild, moderate, or severe brain injury and compare their cognitive performance to the control group of 25 adults with a mild, moderate, or severe brain injury. The control group will train on computerized tasks of social awareness. Participants in both groups will be assessed prior to training and immediately post-training and one month-post training.

Assistive Soft Skills and Employment Training (ASSET) in TBI Injury
Recruiting
Pediatric traumatic brain injury (TBI) is often associated with difficulties in social functioning. Loss of social contacts and difficulties maintaining social connections is common after pediatric TBI, extending into adulthood. Social skills are a key aspect of social functioning critical to forming and maintaining social relationships with others, including family, friends, teachers and co-workers. Social skills deficits are thus critical to social participation and overall quality of life. Th... Read More

Pilot Study of NeuroTriage Device in Patients With Potential Brain Injury and/or Impairment
Recruiting
This protocol is aimed at collecting oculomotor response data from a variety of brain injuries and impairments, and to secondarily evaluate the functionality and ease of use of the NeuroTriage device in the ED in patients with any presumed brain injury and/or impairment. For example, prior studies in adolescents with a concussion have shown that they tend to overshoot the pattern when asked to follow the movement of the lights in the binoculars

SeeMe: An Automated Tool to Detect Early Recovery After Brain Injury
Recruiting
Early prediction of outcomes after acute brain injury (ABI) remains a major unsolved problem. Presently, physicians make predictions using clinical examination, traditional scoring systems, and statistical models. In this study, we will use a novel technique, "SeeMe," to objectively assess the level of consciousness in patients suffering from comas following ABI. SeeMe is a program that quantifies total facial motion over time and compares the response after a spoken command (i.e. "open your eye... Read More

Online Intervention for Traumatic Brain Injury Wellbeing
Recruiting
Traumatic brain injury (TBI) patients face notable impairments which lead to reduced performance and regulation of daily and overall functioning. There are a number of interventions made to combat these qualms; however, such interventions have historically been therapeutically demanding, which limits their practical benefit. An online therapeutic intervention can provide a cost-effective approach that can be particularly well-suited to the needs and limitations of TBI. It focuses both on develop... Read More

The Impact of Community-based Wellness Programs on The Triple Aim
Recruiting
People with disabilities experience a staggering incidence of secondary conditions that can result in death or negatively impact their health, participation in the community, and quality of life. Many of these chronic secondary conditions are preventable. The Institute for Healthcare Improvement has advocated for optimizing care through programs that simultaneously improve health and the patient experience of care, while reducing cost, called the "Triple Aim." Studies have shown that the Triple... Read More
