Pain Paid Clinical Trials in Illinois

The main goal of this clinical trial is to test benefits of completing online pain coping skills training program in women who have been diagnosed with stage I-III breast cancer, who have completed their primary cancer treatment, who are taking an AI medication, and who have arthralgia. Arthralgia is a type of joint, bone, and muscle pain that is a common side effect of AI medications. The main questions it aims to answer are: 1. Whether online pain coping skills training reduces the severity of pain and the interference it causes in women's daily lives. 2. Whether online pain coping skills training improves emotional distress, quality of life, and adherence to AI medications. 3. Whether benefits of online pain coping skills training are at least partially caused by women's increased confidence that they can manage their pain and a reduction in unhelpful thinking patterns about pain. 4. Whether online pain coping skills training improves effects of AI medications on sleep problems and symptoms of menopause like hot flashes and night sweats. Participants can complete all parts of the study at home. They will: 1. Complete four sets of questionnaires throughout the study, which will take about 9 to 10 months. 2. Attend 3 meetings in the first month of the study, all of which can be held via a video conference. 3. Use an electronic pill bottle to track their use of their AI medication. 4. Be randomized (like flipping a coin) to one of two study arms: They will either receive education about AIs and arthralgia or they will receive this education along with access to an online pain coping skills training program. Research will compare the education group to the education plus online pain coping skills training group to see if online pain coping skills training has the benefits mentioned above. Read Less

Many people in the US suffer from chronic pain. Often times, individuals who have chronic pain also feel depressed, anxious, or hopeless, which can worsen pain. Psychologists, therefore, have developed several treatments to help people with chronic pain. These psychological treatments differ. The most common treatment is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) for chronic pain, which helps patients better manage pain through changing thoughts and behaviors. Two newer, less common psychological therapies are Pain Reprocessing Therapy (PRT) and Emotion Awareness and Expression Therapy (EAET). These therapies emphasize that chronic pain is mainly due to plastic processes of over-sensitization in the brain and nervous system, and that psychotherapies can significantly reduce or eliminate pain. Although similar, PRT and EAET stress different aspects of treatment. PRT emphasizes that one's fear of pain and bodily injury maintains the brain's sense of threat, thereby also maintaining the pain response; EAET emphasizes that one's conditioned psychological state of stress and tension maintains a sense of threat, thereby maintaining the pain response. These three treatments have yet to be compared; it is unclear which psychological processes are most important to treating chronic pain. There is growing interest in single-session psychotherapy interventions. Studies have shown that just a single session of CBT or EAET can help individuals reduce their pain. PRT has yet to be condensed to a single-session intervention. This study will compare a single session of CBT, PRT, and EAET with a no-treatment control group to test whether 1) one treatment outperforms the others, and 2) different mechanisms/ approaches matter to chronic pain treatment. The purpose of this study is to assess the effects of transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS) applied in conjunction with Transcranial Ultrasound (TUS) for the treatment of addiction in opiate use disorder with chronic pain. The aim of this study is to determine if duloxetine is associated with differences in post-operative pain, patient-reported outcome measures, and opioid consumption in patients undergoing primary total knee arthroplasty compared to patients who do not receive the medication. If so, duloxetine has the potential to become widely incorporated into the multi-modal analgesic regimen given to patients following knee replacements. Read Less

The investigative team will provide 27 slides with bullet points and images of pain referral patterns for different causes (e.g., herniated disc, facet joint arthritis) for patients seen for a new visit with a chief complaint of chronic low back pain. This material is all publicly available but has been compiled in presentation form. This will have educational benefit for patients, discussing clinical signs and symptoms, risk factors and basic treatments. There will also be a smaller control group of that gets a condensed 4-slide presentation. After review of the slides, an independent observer will ask the patient what they think are the 2 most likely causes of their LBP (in order of likelihood) and match that with the attending physician and trainee, who will independently do the same. This study is looking into how safe and useful NOCISCAN is. NOCISCAN is a software as a Service (SaaS) tool that uses Magnetic Resonance (MR) spectroscopy. Nociscan (instead of 'It') leverages MRS to noninvasively help physicians distinguish between painful and nonpainful discs in the lumbar spine.
