Comparison of Body Composition Changes With Weight Loss Interventions
Recruiting
This study is being done to compare the effects of a newer class of weight loss medications to weight loss surgery on the body's muscle, metabolism, and side effects over time. People with severe obesity often lose weight using either medications like GLP-1 receptor agonists (such as semaglutide or tirzepatide) or by having bariatric surgery, such as gastric bypass. While both approaches can lead to weight loss, they may affect the body in different ways.

Redefining BMI: The Body, Mind, and Inflammation Trial
Recruiting
Emerging adulthood (18-25 years of age) is a critical developmental window to promote weight management and cardiometabolic health, particularly for emerging adult women. The primary purpose of this study is to test the preliminary efficacy of the intensive lifestyle intervention for EA women in reducing adiposity, as well as improving biomarkers of inflammation and metabolic risk over 12 months compared with a traditional behavioral weight loss intervention. This treatment program will be teste... Read More

Mechanistic Study of Inspiratory Training in Childhood Asthma (MICA)
Recruiting
This is single-center cross-sectional mechanistic study in lean and obese children with moderate-severe asthma, followed by a randomized, SHAM-controlled trial of Inspiratory Training (IT). The primary outcome is to describe the contributions of inspiratory muscle dysfunction (IMD) and Small Airway Dysfunction (SAD) to obesity-related versus non-obesity-related asthma. The study will involve training (IT) for 8 weeks at three intensity levels (SHAM, low and high). Target dose: 150 inspirations t... Read More

Sympathetic Transduction in Obesity-associated Hypertension (OB-HTN)
Recruiting
The purpose of this study is to understand how the nervous system communicates to blood vessels to increase blood pressure during stress. The study will also investigate how hypertension and obesity influence the nervous system and vascular function. The study will involve measuring sympathetic nervous system activity and blood flow during common laboratory physiological stress protocols (e.g. hypoxia, exercise), and in response to infusion of drugs that cause vasodilation or vasoconstriction.

Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), formerly known as non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), a major global public health concern, is commonly associated with obesity, diabetes, and dyslipidemia. MASLD is currently the most common cause of chronic liver disease affecting about 80% of people with obesity, ranging from simple fat deposits in the liver to Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatohepatitis (MASH), cellular injury, advanced fibrosis, cirrhosis, or hepa... Effect of Ketone Esters on Liver Fat Content and Metabolic Function
Recruiting
The goal of this clinical trial is to determine whether ingestion of a ketone ester drink helps improve liver health and blood glucose control. Ketones are a type of energy source made by the body during times of weight loss, low carbohydrate intake and starvation.
People enrolled in this study will be randomly assigned (by chance, like the flip of a coin) to one of two groups:
Group 1: Ketone ester drink consumed daily for 6 weeks. Group 2: Placebo drink consumed daily for 6 weeks.

Investigating the Impact of Obesity on Pubertal Development in Girls
Recruiting
Background:
Studies suggest that overweight girls may be developing breast tissue, and therefore starting puberty, earlier than normal weight girls. However, it is hard to distinguish breast tissue from fatty tissue. Researchers think that by using breast ultrasound, among other tests, they can do a better job of telling whether an overweight girl has breast tissue. This will help them understand if overweight girls are truly entering puberty before normal weight girls.
