There are currently 82 active clinical trials seeking participants for Obstructive Sleep Apnea research studies. The states with the highest number of trials for Obstructive Sleep Apnea participants are California, Ohio, Florida and Pennsylvania.
Atrial Fibrosis Progression in Sleep Apnea Patients: A Pilot Study
Recruiting
The investigators hypothesize that Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is an independent risk factor for atrial fibrosis development. The investigators aim to prove the presence and progression of atrial fibrosis on Delayed Enhancement Magnetic Resonance Imaging (DE-MRI) in OSA patients without atrial fibrillation (AF). The investigators will also investigate the correlation between OSA metrics (nocturnal oxygen saturation and Apnea Hypopnea Index (AHI)) and degree of fibrosis at baseline and its pro... Read More

Ansa Cervicalis and Hypoglossal Nerve Stimulation in OSA
Recruiting
Polysomnography (PSG) and drug-induced sleep endoscopy (DISE) are widely used diagnostic studies for assessing obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) severity and collapse patterns of the upper airway anatomy during sleep. Hypoglossal nerve stimulation (HNS) therapy for obstructive sleep apnea suffers from variable response at the level of the soft palate. The Investigators propose a study examining the physiologic effect of ansa cervicalis stimulation (ACS) alone and in combination with HNS during PSG a... Read More

Intraoperative Ansa Cervicalis Nerve (ACN) Stimulation
Recruiting
Recently published data suggest that stimulation of the infrahyoid strap muscles increases pharyngeal patency in patients with obstructive sleep apnea, but the innervation of these muscles by the ansa cervicalis is variable. The investigators propose a study examining the anatomic variation of the ansa cervicalis and the effect of neurostimulation on muscle recruitment.

OSA PAP Treatment for Veterans With SUD and PTSD on Residential Treatment Unit
Recruiting
Substance use disorder (SUD) and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) frequently co-occur and having both disorders is associated with greater psychological and functional impairment than having either disorder alone. This is especially true in residential settings where both disorders are more severe than outpatient settings. Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is highly comorbid with both disorders and untreated OSA is associated with worse functional impairment across multiple domains, worse qualit... Read More

Impact of Positive Airway Pressure Therapy on Clinical Outcomes in Older Veterans With Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease and Comorbid Obstructive Sleep Apnea (Overlap Syndrome)
Recruiting
Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) are highly prevalent chronic respiratory diseases in the Veteran population. OSA co-occurring with COPD, known as Overlap Syndrome (OVS), is a complex chronic medical condition associated with grave consequences. OVS is highly prevalent in Veterans. Veterans with OVS may be at increased risk for cognitive deficits, poor sleep quality as well as a reduced quality of life (QoL). The overall objective is to study the eff... Read More

The Recovery in Stroke Using PAP Study
Recruiting
The proposed study is a randomized controlled trial among an anicipated 180 participants with acute ischemic stroke and mod/severe OSA diagnosed by ambulatory polysomnography (PSG) comparing PAP treatment with usual care concerning the primary outcome of functional recovery.

Use of High-resolution Manometry to Detect Upper Airway Obstruction During Sleep
Recruiting
Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a major public health issue in both children and adults, present in 1-5% of children and 10-30% of adults. It is characterized by repeated episodes of airway obstruction during sleep, leading to brain arousal, sympathetic activation, oxygen desaturation, sleep fragmentation, and non-restorative sleep. Patients report daytime tiredness, insomnia, and morning headaches. Children with OSA experience daytime somnolence, difficulties at school, behavioral problems, en... Read More

Endotype-Targeted Therapy to Rescue OSA Patients Struggling With CPAP Adherence (TOP-CPAP)
Recruiting
More than 10% of the US population have obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Standard of care is therapy with CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) which virtually eliminates OSA. However, most patients use CPAP only for part of the night (4-5hours) and about 50% patients discontinue CPAP long-term. Alternative therapies are limited, thus many OSA patients remain at risk of OSA sequelae (e.g. sleepiness, memory issues, high blood pressure, etc.). Importantly, different patients get OSA for differ... Read More

Is Obstructive Sleep Apnea Important in the Development of Alzheimer's Disease?
Recruiting
Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is common in older adults and has recently been implicated in pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Research has shown that sleep disruptions have caused memory impairment. Sleep apnea is a form of sleep disruption. We would like to examine how obstructive sleep apnea may contribute to the progression of Alzheimer's disease.

Mechanisms of Upper Airway Obstruction
Recruiting
The current study is designed to examine underlying mechanisms of action of lingual muscles in the maintenance of airway patency during sleep. The investigators' major hypothesis is that specific tongue muscles are responsible for relieving upper airway obstruction during sleep.

Stroke and CPAP Outcome Study 3
Recruiting
A problem with breathing during sleep, called obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), likely increases the risk of stroke and is common in people who have had a stroke, present in about 2/3 of stroke survivors. There is also evidence that OSA predicts worse outcome after stroke. The question being addressed in the Stroke and CPAP Outcome Study 3 (SCOUTS3) is how to improve use of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy to treat OSA when started during intensive stroke rehabilitation.
