Pain Paid Clinical Trials in Massachusetts

The purpose of this pilot efficacy study is to examine the effects of EMG-biofeedback (EMG-BF) on pain-related outcomes in Chronic Low Back Pain (CLBP) patients, Recent mastectomy and lumpectomy patients, and patients with episodic migraine. EMG-BF facilitates neuromuscular retraining and muscle relaxation by using audio and visual stimuli using an EMG surface electrode-based biosensor and a software installed on a tablet or smart phone. For this pilot efficacy study, we will recruit 125 patients with chronic low back pain, 125 patients who are expected to undergo mastectomy and 80 patients with episodic migraine. Participants will be randomly assigned to either the JOGO Digital Therapeutics EMG Biofeedback device or treatment as usual control group. Patients assigned to the intervention group will be asked to complete self-report questionnaires assessing demographics, pain intensity, negative affect, physical function, pain catastrophizing and sleep, will undergo QST and will be asked to wear Actiwatches to keep track of health behaviors, prior to and after completing the intervention. The intervention consists of weekly sessions during which participants will be instructed on how to use the device by a trained biofeedback instructor. Patients in the control group will undergo sensory testing procedures at baseline and after treatment period but will receive no active treatment. The aims of this study are to examine the impact of EMG-BF on pain and QST and the impact of EMG-BF on psychosocial function. We hypothesize that patients that will undergo the EMG-BF will demonstrate reductions in pain, physical functioning, sleep, pain catastrophizing, anxiety and depression. Read Less

This research is being done to determine if remote yoga-based exercise can help reduce chronic pain. It will include three virtual research visits. This cohort study will include three remote research visits and an online questionnaire administration. In addition, participants will attend 8 weekly virtual yoga sessions with a daily 30-minute "homework assignment" of 30 minutes of video-guided yoga practice. Read Less

Chronic Prostatitis/Chronic Pelvic Pain Syndrome (CP/CPPS) is a condition with several causes of which some remain unknown. It is believed that some types of CP may be genetic or passed down (inherited) from one generation to the next. In this study, we are collecting genetic material and medical information to try to determine if genetic factors play a role in CP/CPPS. We will be collecting DNA (from Blood/Saliva sample) and urine from each participant. Bladder tissue from affected individuals will also be collected. Individuals and families with CP/CPPS will be enrolled. Family members of an individual with CP/CPPS are eligible whether or not they also experience CP/CPPS symptoms. Read Less

The study utilizes a 3-arm placebo-controlled RCT to study the effectiveness of ketamine in reducing chronic post-mastectomy pain. Participants randomized to the first arm will receive a 0.35 mg/kg dose after induction, followed by a 0.25 mg/kg/hr infusion during surgery (up to a maximum of 6 hours) and continued for 2 hours postoperatively. Participants in the second arm will receive a single dose of 0.6 mg/kg of ketamine in the post-anesthesia care unit, and the final group will serve as the control group and receive saline (no ketamine). The goal of this observational study has the purpose of collecting biological samples from obese patients undergoing evaluation for weight loss by means of medical or endoscopic therapies; and of post bariatric surgery patients presenting with short- and long-term surgical complications. The aim is to enhance the overall understanding of the mechanisms leading to obesity, weight loss, failure to lose weight, and weight regain following treatment. This is a prospective, randomized study in patients who receive a nerve block prior to surgery. The aim is to investigate whether individual differences in psychosocial and pain profiles may play a role in how patients experience sedation for regional anesthesia. The study will utilize a mixed-methods approach, including a randomized controlled intervention and semi-structured interviews, in order to systematically investigate the relationship between an individual patient's level of catastrophizing and efficacy of procedural sedation, while exploring patient satisfaction with the preoperative nerve block experience. This study is being done to see if nitrous oxide during vasectomy decreases pain and anxiety, and also assess whether patients have better satisfaction when they control their own level of nitrous oxide during the procedure. If we find that patients experience less pain or anxiety with nitrous oxide, it could be suggested that self-adjusted nitrous oxide (SANO) may be a useful tool for improving experience of care during vasectomy. This is a multicenter prospective study of patients who currently have stably implanted spinal cord simulators. Patients will be randomly assigned to turn on or off their spinal cord stimulators for two week intervals up to six weeks after enrollment, and on the final day of study participation, for one hour intervals, in a multi-crossover design. Persons with COPD have both chronic musculoskeletal pain and dyspnea that require accurate diagnosis and treatment, ultimately to optimize functional status. The investigators propose to use advanced neuroimaging techniques to understand central mechanisms of chronic pain, dyspnea, and physical activity promotion in COPD. The investigators' novel proposal to correlate subjective symptoms (chronic pain and dyspnea) with an objective central biomarker (resting state functional connectivity) and examine their changes in response to a non-pharmacological, non-addictive physical activity intervention will personalize the care of Veterans with COPD. There are few applications available in the community to help teenagers manage pain after surgery. The focus of this study is to better understand the pain experience of children after having surgery and to design a Smartphone app called "iCanCope with Post-Operative Pain" (iCanCope PostOp), to help children and parents to better manage pain at home after surgery. The app will help keep track of pain, provide information about the teenager's surgery and provides "in-the-moment" advice wherever and whenever the patient needs it. Read Less
