The PROACTIVE Study for Black Elders

Chronic musculoskeletal pain (CMP), while a leading cause of physical disablement, is a neglected national health disparity issue in Black communities. The purpose of this study is to test a novel culturally congruent pain self-management intervention. A total of 120 persons aged 50-92, self-identifying as Black or African American having CMP will be invited to participate in this study. The primary outcome measured throughout this 3-year study is movement-evoked pain (MEP).

This is a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled cross-over human laboratory study with a duration of approximately 4 weeks, during which participants will come to the testing site for a total of five times: one initial screening session, and four experimental sessions where study medication, Cannabidiol (CBD) will be administered, separated by at least 72 hours to limit carryover effects.

Anatomical and Functional Imaging Correlates of Chronic Pain in Cerebral Palsy

The investigators hope to use MRI biomarkers to identify and characterize sensorimotor network disruption patterns associated with chronic pain and sensory deficits in CP. Investigators will use existing information in the medical record as well as subjective reports from interview, physical exam data, and anatomical and functional MRI data to non-invasively identify brain injury correlates of pain and sensory deficits.

The investigators propose to conduct a dose-escalation trial of an FDA-approved antiepileptic drug, lacosamide, added to opioid therapy in patients with chronic abdominal pain from chronic pancreatitis (CP). This pilot trial will test the feasibility of the study design and provide reassurance regarding the tolerability and safety of lacosamide used concomitantly with opioids in this patient population to reduce the condition known clinically as opioid-induced hyperalgesia (OIH).
