There are currently 37 active clinical trials seeking participants for Fibromyalgia research studies. The states with the highest number of trials for Fibromyalgia participants are Florida, California, Ohio and Texas.
Brain Mechanisms of Juvenile Fibromyalgia
Recruiting
This study evaluates whether differences exist between adolescent females with juvenile-onset fibromyalgia and healthy controls in processing of pain and emotion at the neural level as assessed by functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). The study includes a longitudinal component to evaluate changes in neural processing of pain and emotion before and after different treatment strategies.

Supraspinal Processing of Sensory Aspects of Pain
Recruiting
The goal of this basic science study is to learn about the brain mechanisms of chronic pain across different chronic pain syndromes in pediatric patients. The main questions it aims to answer are: Are there shared and distinct brain systems engaged by different forms of pediatric chronic pain? What are predictors of recovery from chronic pain? What brain systems are associated with the spread of pain? For this study participants will undergo: Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) Quant... Read More

Pain Processing in Inflammatory and Non-Inflammatory Chronic Pain Syndromes
Recruiting
Fibromyalgia (FM) is a chronic musculoskeletal pain disorder that afflicts up to 4% of the general population. The evaluation of pain mechanisms in FM has shown predominant central abnormalities and therefore has been designated as nociplastic pain syndrome. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is characterized by polyarthritis and pain from inflamed tissues, consistent with nociceptive pain. FM and RA patients may utilize overlapping pain mechanisms resulting in nociceptive and nociplastic pain.

Chromatic Retinal Stimulation to Reduce Chronic Pain and Pain Sensitivity
Recruiting
Participants with chronic pain conditions including chronic low back pain and fibromyalgia may benefit from light stimuli presented to the retina to reduce chronic pain severity and pain sensitivity. Participants will be recruited into this study and will be presented with one of three uniform light stimuli via a wide-field ganzfeld in three conditions to determine the retinal mechanisms that reduce pain. This work will lead to a greater understanding of retinal mechanisms that contribute to pai... Read More

Sleep and Pain Interventions in Women With Fibromyalgia
Recruiting
Insomnia affects 67-88% of chronic pain patients. SPIN II is a randomized controlled clinical trial that will compare the effects of two cognitive behavioral sleep treatments in women with fibromyalgia and insomnia. This trial will yield important information about the roles of sleep, arousal, and brain structure and function in the development and maintenance of chronic pain in women with fibromyalgia.

Effects of Breathing and Attention Training (BAT) on Pain Modulation
Recruiting
The hypersensitivity of fibromyalgia is associated with abnormal pain modulation within the CNS, but not with peripheral or central sensitization. Many brain areas that contribute to modulation of pain are known, but their testing is complex and expensive. Quantitative sensory testing is easier to perform and repeatable. Therefore, it will be used to evaluate the effects of Breathing Attention Training (BAT) on the hypersensitivity of FM participants. BAT is a form of mindfulness meditation show... Read More

Fibromyalgia TENS in Physical Therapy Study (TIPS): an Embedded Pragmatic Clinical Trial
Recruiting
The purpose of this study is to determine if addition of Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) to routine physical therapy improves movement-evoked pain in patients with fibromyalgia (FM). The study will also determine if addition of TENS to routine physical therapy (PT) improves disease activity and symptoms, increases adherence to physical therapy, increases the likelihood of meeting patient specific functional goals, and reduces medication use.

Treatment of Fibromyalgia With the FibroNova Neuromodulation Device
Recruiting
Fibromyalgia (FM) is a chronic disorder that affects the musculoskeletal system, causing widespread pain, tenderness, and fatigue. It is estimated to affect 1-5% of the population. The primary symptom of fibromyalgia is widespread pain throughout the body, accompanied by tenderness and sensitivity to pressure. Pharmacological treatments include drugs such as antidepressants, anticonvulsants, and painkillers. Another treatment option for fibromyalgia is the use of devices such as Quell. Other no... Generalized Hypersensitivity in Patients With Fibromyalgia Syndrome
Recruiting
Fibromyalgia (FM) is a chronic musculoskeletal pain disorder with unknown causes. Our previous studies showed abnormal sensations of second pain (wind-up), indicating central hypersensitivity as an important mechanism of FM. Triggering events have been implicated as the cause of central hypersensitivity.

Mechanisms of Affective Touch in Chronic Pain
Recruiting
This study compares how different types of touch found in massage therapies impact pain perception, and whether these effects differ in individuals with and without chronic pain. This study also examines psychological factors that may predict differences in touch perception in individuals with chronic pain. This research will improve our understanding of whether and how massage therapies can benefit pain and health, and whether this differs in people who suffer from chronic pain.
