Clinical Research for Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency–Associated Liver Disease
Recruiting
The Redwood Study is currently enrolling adults 18 to 75 years of age with Alpha-1
Liver Disease. The purpose of the study is to evaluate how safe and effective an
investigational study drug is compared to a placebo (both groups will receive
injections, but the placebo contains no active medication) in the treatment of liver
disease. If you or any of your family members have a confirmed or suspected
diagnosis of Alpha-1 Liver Disease, you may be eligible.

The Effect of Interval Exercise on Functional Outcomes in Veterans With COPD and OSA
Recruiting
The term "Overlap Syndrome" (OS) is used to describe the presence of both chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in a single patient. Due to premature aging, patients with OS are prone to developing functional decline up to 20 years earlier than the general population. The International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) evaluates functional status in chronic pulmonary disease globally in 5 domains. The investigators propose to stud... The Effects of Positive Airway Pressure on the Mucolytic Effects of NAC (TEAM)
Recruiting
The goal of this clinical trial is to determine if positive pressure during inspiration will improve penetration of aerosolized N-Acetylcysteine (NAC) into airway mucus plugs in the lungs of patients with asthma or Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).
The main questions it aims to answer are:
Does delivery of aerosolized NAC with positive inspiratory pressure have a greater effect on mucus plug burden in the lungs than delivery of NAC without positive pressure.
Does delivery of aeroso... Read More

High Flow vs Conventional Oxygen in Head and Neck Surgery
Recruiting
Patients undergoing major head and neck surgery are at risk for postoperative pulmonary complications. The goal of this randomized clinical trial is to evaluate the effectiveness of high flow heated humidified oxygen at preventing postoperative pulmonary complications after major head and neck surgery, when compared to conventional oxygen therapy (aerosol cool mist).

Prospective, Observational Study of Wellinks Effect on COPD Hospital Readmissions
Recruiting
This prospective, observational study is designed to investigate clinical outcomes and collect patient feedback on the use of Wellinks, an integrated virtual chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) management solution, for patients recently discharged from the hospital due to an acute exacerbation of their COPD.

Pulmonary Hypertension SOLAR
Recruiting
The main goal of this study is to develop a noninvasive signature for pulmonary vascular remodeling in Group 3 PH patients, using hyperpolarized 129Xe magnetic resonance imaging (129Xe MRI). Such a signature may identify Group 3 PH responders to PAH-specific therapies. PAH's unique 129Xe MRI signature has been shown in previous studies. Past studies have lacked a pathologic "ground truth" correlate of these signatures, which could be provided by comparing them with the pathology of lung explant... Read More

Relationship of Inflammation and Pulmonary Function to Fungal Translocation in HIV
Recruiting
The investigator will study the origin of fungal translocation in HIV, its relationship to the mycobiome, and its relationship to lung function and inflammation. Supported by the preliminary data and published studies, this project is based on the premise that circulating BDG derived from microbial translocation stimulates inflammation and worsens lung function in PWH.
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a significant public health problem with few therapies that modify disease traj... Read More

A Study of Patients With Chronic Disease
Recruiting
TARGET-RWE is a 10-year, international, longitudinal, observational study of patients with chronic disease designed to specifically address important clinical questions that remain incompletely answered from registration trials. The protocol will follow a master protocol design in which a shared study infrastructure supports progressive development of the registry across the spectrum of chronic diseases.

The Development of an Integrated Physical Activity and Mental Health Intervention for Veterans With COPD, Emotion Distress, and Low Physical Activity
Recruiting
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is prevalent and debilitating chronic disease in Veterans. COPD is highly co-morbid with depression and anxiety conferring greater morbidity and mortality risk. Physical activity is a modifiable behavior that can improve COPD outcomes. However, to date, interventions targeting physical activity have not addressed the high comorbidity between COPD and depression and/or anxiety symptoms ("emotional distress") despite emotional distress predicting poorer... Identifying Right Ventricular Dysfunction in COPD Through Right Heart Catheterization, Imaging and Exercise
Recruiting
This study plans to learn more about heart function among individuals with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). In particular, the investigators want to understand the different patterns of right ventricular response to pulmonary hypertension (high pressure in the lungs) during rest and exercise. By identifying patterns of right ventricular dysfunction, this study will help identify better treatments for patients with COPD in the future.

Breathe Easier II: A Dyad-based Multiple Behavior Intervention
Recruiting
This pilot randomized control trial (RCT) will test a 12-week, multiple behavior intervention physical activity and stress management for survivors with early stage lung cancer (stages I-III) and their family members (1 survivor + 1 family member or friend = 1 dyad). The long-term goal of this research is to improve health outcomes for survivors of lung cancer and their family members.
