The Reducing REVISITS Study: A Cluster RCT
Recruiting
This type II hybrid effectiveness-implementation trial will concurrently study the comparative effectiveness of virtual vs. in-person COPD care transition programs implemented via virtual mentored implementation approaches with and without co-design methods. The investigators will enroll up to 24 randomized sites (with a goal minimum of 16 sites) to: Deliver the COPD programs implemented via mentored support in collaboration with SHM Center for Quality Improvement. Compare the effectiveness an... Read More

High Flow vs Conventional Oxygen in Head and Neck Surgery
Recruiting
Patients undergoing major head and neck surgery are at risk for postoperative pulmonary complications. The goal of this randomized clinical trial is to evaluate the effectiveness of high flow heated humidified oxygen at preventing postoperative pulmonary complications after major head and neck surgery, when compared to conventional oxygen therapy (aerosol cool mist).

Effect of Switching From Cigarette Smoking to THS on Disease Progression in Mild to Moderate COPD Subjects With Chronic Bronchitis Symptoms.
Recruiting
The purpose of this study is to demonstrate the slowing of the disease progression including the improvement of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) symptoms in smoking subjects with mild to moderate COPD and a history of chronic bronchitis symptoms (sputum and cough) who switch to the Tobacco Heating System (THS) as compared to those who continue to smoke cigarettes.

Accessing Mobility Using Wearable Sensors
Recruiting
This study will examine whether wearable sensors can be used to track changes in cognitive-motor performance in response to a disease or an intervention. The investigators specific aims are twofold, first aim to explore whether and how a clinical condition such as Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) or Congestive Heart Failure (CHF) may impact motor-cognitive performance measurable using validated wearable devices (e.g., LEGSys, BalanSENS, and Frailty Meter). Second, the investigators... Read More

Responses to Live Attenuated Influenza Virus (LAIV) in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
Recruiting
This study will determine the functional status of the nasal immune environment with LAIV exposure in COPD persons with frequent exacerbations (defined as individuals with two or more episodes of worsening in COPD symptoms requiring treatment with antibiotics and/or steroids in the prior 12 months) and COPD persons without frequent exacerbations to determine acute exacerbation of COPD (AECOPD)-associated dysfunction in a) cytokines and immune effector cells of the nasal mucosa and b) viral repli... The Effects of Positive Airway Pressure on the Mucolytic Effects of NAC (TEAM)
Recruiting
The goal of this clinical trial is to determine if positive pressure during inspiration will improve penetration of aerosolized N-Acetylcysteine (NAC) into airway mucus plugs in the lungs of patients with asthma or Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). The main questions it aims to answer are: Does delivery of aerosolized NAC with positive inspiratory pressure have a greater effect on mucus plug burden in the lungs than delivery of NAC without positive pressure. Does delivery of aeroso... Read More

Nurse Coach-Led Early Palliative Care for Older Adults With COPD and Their Care Partners: The Project EPIC Pilot RCT
Recruiting
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is the third leading cause of death in older Americans. COPD increases in frequency with age, and older adults with COPD often have significant unmet geriatrics-palliative care needs that results in reduced quality of life, high healthcare utilization, and care at the end of life that does not align with the values and wishes of patients and their care partners. Older adults with COPD could benefit from proactive geriatrics-palliative care before the... Read More
