Perineal Massage for Pessary Examinations
Recruiting
Pessaries are effective non-surgical devices for reduction of prolapse. However, use of pessaries are limited in some women due to patient discomfort. While lidocaine can be used to improve pessary checks, its use may be limited due to supply chain shortages, lack of insurance coverage, and optimization of resource utilization. More techniques to improve pessary examination comfort are needed. Perineal massage prior to delivery and at the time of active labor has been noted to reduce perineal tr... Read More

Chronic Pain Diagnosis and Treatment in Torture Survivors
Recruiting
The goal Aim 1 of this investigation is to characterize the diagnosis of chronic pain in torture survivors. The investigators hypothesize that using a validated pain screen to supplement the existing United Nations Istanbul Protocol can improve the ability to detect pain from 15% to 90% in this study population. Investigators will test this hypothesis by conducting a prospective, blind comparison to gold standard study. The goal of Aim 2 is to evaluate the acceptability of somatic pain treatment... Read More

Virtual Reality for Pain Management in Burn Patients
Recruiting
This study is a randomized proof-of-concept study to assess the efficacy of Virtual Reality (VR) vs standard of care in 50 adult patients in the New York Presbyterian Burn Unit. The participants who are randomized to receive the virtual reality intervention will also receive opioids, which is the standard of care and is known to be effective. Participants will be randomly assigned to two groups. The first group will receive VR during their painful procedure (e.g., wound dressing changes, physica... Read More

Heating Pad for in Office Cystoscopy and Urodynamic Testing
Recruiting
Patient frequently report experiencing discomfort associated with cystoscopy or urodynamic studies (UDS), and a small percentage of patients refuse these important procedures due to discomfort or fear of discomfort. Heating pads are an inexpensive and low-risk way to reduce patient discomfort during these procedures, which to our knowledge has not been investigated in the United States.

Study of Low-intensity Focused Ultrasound Effects on Heat Evoked fMRI Signals
Recruiting
Study aims to examine the effects of noninvasive brain stimulation on brain signals. This insight may have potential clinical implications for addiction, pain, and mental health populations. Participants will receive MRI and CT imaging. Participants receive low-intensity focused ultrasound (LIFU) to temporarily change brain activity. Participants then receive fMRI scans to measure changes in both resting and heat evoked brain signaling using a quantitative sensory testing device. Heart rate, blo... Read More

PAINED: Project Addressing INequities in the Emergency Department
Recruiting
Racial and ethnic inequities in health care quality have been described across a broad range of clinical settings, patient populations, and outcomes. Our overarching goal is to eradicate health care inequities through evidence-based interventions. The objectives of this proposal are to develop and test the impact of two interventions on overcoming clinician implicit bias and mitigating inequities in the management of pain among children seeking care in the emergency department for the treatment...
