Prospective Randomized Trial of CPAP for SDB in Patients Who Use Opioids
Recruiting
Patients with chronic pain who use opioids appear to be at increased risk for breathing issues during sleep, termed sleep disordered breathing (SDB). Treatment of SDB often consists of use of a device during sleep that provides continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) via a mask interface. The goal of this study is to determine whether patients with chronic pain who use opioids and have SDB might benefit from the use of CPAP in terms of sleep quality, pain, quality of life, and other measures.... Opioid Sparing Anesthesia Care for Pediatric Patients Having Tonsil Surgery
Recruiting
This is a prospective, randomized, controlled, non-inferiority study of patients undergoing tonsil surgeries at Boston Children's Hospital Waltham. The overall aim is to evaluate the efficacy of an opioid anesthetic plan (morphine, ketorolac, and acetaminophen versus an opioid sparing anesthetic plan (dexmedetomidine, ketorolac and acetaminophen) for perioperative analgesia and recovery time in patients undergoing tonsillectomies and tonsillotomies at Boston Children's Hospital Waltham. Clinical and Scientific Assessment of Pain and Painful Disorders
Recruiting
Background: Researchers want to better understand pain by studying people with and without different kinds of pain. To do this, researchers will expose people to pleasant and unpleasant sensations. They will ask them questions about their pain. Researchers also want to see if these people are eligible for other research studies at the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health. Objectives: To study the experience of pain. Also to find people eligible to join other NIH studies.... Read More

Sociocultural & Biobehavioral Influences on Pain Expression and Assessment
Recruiting
Background: People can feel different levels of pain. This may depend on social, cultural, and biological factors. These factors can also influence how people respond to each other, and how they judge other people s experiences. Researchers want to learn more about these relationships. Objective: To study if social and cultural factors lead to differences in pain experience and how pain is interpreted by other individuals. Eligibility: Healthy adults ages 18-60 Design: Participants will h... Read More

Neural and Psychological Mechanisms of Pain Perception
Recruiting
Background: - Painful stimuli cause changes in a network of brain regions called the "Pain Matrix." But most of these regions respond to many other stimuli, not just pain. Researchers want to understand how different factors influence pain. They want to test what happens when people expect different levels of pain and receive treatments that can modify pain. They want to see if these factors influence decisions about pain and how the body responds to it. They also want to compare pain with resp... Read More

Virtual Reality (VR) for Prone Pain Procedures
Recruiting
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of virtual reality (VR) distraction in patients undergoing interventional pain procedures in the prone position. VR has been shown to improve patient experience during interventional pain procedures, however, many of these procedures are done in the prone position making VR a challenge. This study will evaluate the effect of a VR headset and support in patients undergoing prone interventional pain procedures compared to control.

Psychophysical Studies of Cancer Therapy Pain
Recruiting
The Aim of this Study is to examine the feasibility of using quantitative sensory testing procedures, widely applied to the experimental study of sensory processing in humans both with and without various pain syndromes, to now characterize the psychophysical properties of neuropathic pain that has developed as a consequence of cancer therapy. Skin punch biopsies will be performed in patients with chemotherapy-induced pain to determine whether the impairment of nerve function is due to actual re... Read More

Dexmedetomidine Use in Infants Undergoing Cooling Due to Neonatal Encephalopathy (DICE Trial)
Recruiting
Management of neonatal pain and sedation often includes opioid therapy. A growing body of evidence suggests long-term harm associated with neonatal opioid exposure. Providing optimal sedation while neonates are undergoing therapeutic hypothermia (TH) may be beneficial but also presents therapeutic challenges. While there is evidence from animal models of brain injury and clinical trials in adults to support the safety and neuroprotective properties of dexmedetomidine (DMT), there are no publishe...
